Each entity carries attributes. A service, for example, has a name, a type, features, benefits, an audience and a location.
The Foundation
An entity is a distinct thing, concept, person, organization, place, product, service or subject that can be described through its attributes and relationships. If you can name it, describe what it is like, and say what it connects to, it behaves as an entity.
That last part matters. A word on a page is just a word. An entity is a thing with properties and connections, and those are what give a page its context.
These are examples of how entities can be described and connected on a website. They are not a claim about how any search engine internally identifies or stores every entity.
The Difference
A keyword represents a search expression. An entity represents the underlying concept or thing being discussed. The two are not in competition.

The Centre
A website needs a clear conceptual centre. The central entity should be strongly connected to the source context, the business purpose, the main expertise, the services offered, the audience served and the search intent behind all of it.
Hold it steady across every section and the site reads as being about one specific thing. Let it drift and the site reads as several loosely related businesses sharing a domain.

Naming an entity says very little on its own. What it is connected to, and how, is where the meaning sits. Each connection below carries a label describing the relationship.

Coverage
Entity coverage is a site-level property, not a per-page one. Each area of the website carries different entities, and together they should describe one coherent subject.
Entity coverage should stay consistent with the website's source context and topical map. The test is whether an entity genuinely belongs to the subject the site is about.
Avoid forcing unrelated entities into content. Mentioning a concept the business has no real connection to adds noise, not context, and it makes the subject of the site harder to read rather than easier.
Coverage Depth
Topical coverage is not only about listing topics. It also involves understanding the concepts that make up those topics and the relationships between them.
A topic named on a page is a heading. A topic broken into its entities, their attributes and the questions they raise is coverage. That is the difference entity work makes to a topical map.
Structure
Once the entities are mapped, they stop being a content-writing detail and start deciding structure. What deserves a page, what belongs as a section, and what should simply be a link becomes much easier to answer.
Connections
Internal links can reinforce meaningful relationships between relevant pages. When two pages describe entities that genuinely relate, a contextual link states that relationship instead of leaving it implied.
Link count is not the goal. Adding links between pages that have no real relationship weakens the signal from the links that do. Fewer, accurate connections read more clearly than many arbitrary ones.
Machine-Readable
Structured data can help communicate certain information in a standardized format when it accurately represents the page. It describes what is already there. It does not substitute for content that is missing.
Used well, it states the obvious in a form that does not depend on interpretation: who published this, what service it describes, where the business operates.
